Karwasky, who finished 2009 with the No. 1 ranking in the country in 55-and-over singles and doubles, will represent the U.S. in the 30th International Tennis Federation Seniors World Championships in Mexico City, March 29-April 23.
This marks the third straight year that Karwasky has been selected to the team, which captured gold medals in 2008 in Antalya, Turkey and last year in Mallorca, Spain. Last year’s cup team went undefeated.
TWO TOLOGS PICK UP LEAGUE HONORS
Though it only won one Mission League match this season, the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy water polo team had two players earn All-Mission League honors.
Senior hole/set Olivia Gonzalez was named to the first team. Gonzalez finished with a team-high 30 goals for the Tologs, who went 3-12 and 1-11 in league.
Senior goalkeeper Shaylyn Stanley finished with 93 saves and blocked five five-meter shots en route to securing second-team accolades.
“Olivia was our go-to player,” Flintridge Sacred Heart Coach Robert Curreri said. “She’s been our top goal scorer and brought a lot of experience.
“Shaylyn came up big for us. That’s tough to do when you play three sports, but she played great.”
GAELS SECURE LEAGUE ACCOLADES
Four basketball and three soccer players from Holy Family received All-Horizon League honors from the past season.
In basketball, the Gaels (8-14 and 5-3 in league for third place) saw senior guards Shabby Talab and Jennifer Fisher named to the first team. Talab averaged 8.9 points and 4.2 steals per game. Fisher contributed 9.7 points and 2.5 steals per game.
Second-team members included junior forward Gayle Lachica and sophomore guard Gaby Diaz. Lachica averaged 5.6 points and 3.3 steals per game and Diaz contributed 4.6 points and 2.2 steals per contest to help the Gaels advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
“Shabby was the leader of the team and is deserving of the award because she wasn’t afraid to ask for the ball,” Holy Family Coach Ernest Siy said. “With Jennifer, when we needed a basket, she came through for us.
“Gayle always made huge contributions for us. Gaby did well and I expect a lot out of her the next two years.”
Holy Family had three soccer players named to the second team after the Gaels went 2-17 and 2-5 in league. Those who earned recognition were senior sweeper Rossy Gutierrez, senior midfielder Melissa Franco and junior forward Monet Estrada.
