Mailbag: Pleased with charity game coverage

March 20, 2010

Thank you for your coverage of the Stars Shooting for Hope charity basketball game, which benefited the Desi Geestman Foundation (“Going overtime for Desi,” March 15).

It is truly inspiring to see how the hard work of Toll Middle School students and staff can give back so much to a worthy cause and to our community. We feel both privileged and honored to support the Desi Geestman Foundation, which improves the lives of children afflicted with cancer.

City needs to work for Google award

Imagine you are sitting at the Google offices, looking at 200 city applications to compete for experimental Google fiber services (“City aiming to woo Google,” March 8).

How is Glendale exceptional in the use of technology and the Internet that would justify Google to invest in Glendale?

Simple hoorahs won’t do it. Here are a few hard reasons that may persuade Google if implemented:

1. Glendale declares that it will become the hub for multimedia, graphical and animation content. Major players of influence: Art Center College of Design, Walt Disney Animation studios, Glendale Community College, DreamWorks, Hollywood Production Center.

2. Glendale government declares that it will have at least 1,000 employees start using Google’s online electronic medical records, and partner with the three area hospitals.

3. Google EMR becomes the centerpiece for emergency preparedness by the Fire Department.

4. The city government will make a commitment to use Google documents to store and make available to the public essential public records.

5. The Glendale Unified School District will establish firm dates to have all teachers put their homework assignments on the Web.

6. The city of Glendale will partner with private industry and the schools to ensure that every student has a computer at home.

7. The Glendale Community College declares that it will move toward providing key instructional content to be available on the Web and will encourage the faculty to develop its own online materials, thereby saving the students textbook money.

8. Glendale Unified and the college will partner to create core curriculum classes online via YouTube.

When you have all the city stakeholders, Glendale will rise to the top contenders.
