GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
PITCHER OPTIONED
TO SALT LAKE
It appears as if former Crescenta Valley High pitching phenom Trevor Bell will start the 2010 baseball season with the triple-A Salt Lake Bees.
Bell, who made his Major League Baseball debut last year with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, was optioned to Salt Lake on Tuesday along with fellow right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez.
Bell was hoping to compete for the role as the No. 5 starter in the Angels’ rotation, but the return of Joe Saunders from injury, coupled with last year’s late-season trade for Scott Kazmir and the offseason signing of Joel Piniero stacked the deck against the 23-year-old prospect.
A former first-round pick by the Angels, Bell was spectacular during stints at the double-A and triple-A levels last season, compiling a 2.70 earned-run average over 22 starts.
He made his MLB debut in August of last year and stayed with the club for the duration of the regular season. Bell began as a starter, but was moved into the bullpen. He went 1-2 with a 9.74 ERA.
He made three appearances in spring training with the big club this offseason, going 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA over 5 1/3 innings.
KING OF THE WEST
CARD IN MAY
King of the West promotions, led by Glendale Main Event Boxing Club owner Roman Kalantaryan, will hold its debut event — Rage Against the Ropes — on May 6 in Hollywood.
Among those tentatively scheduled to compete on the hybrid boxing/mixed martial arts card will be Glendale MMA fighter Sevak Magakian, Glendale boxer Vacho Avagyain and Haik Tsaturyan, who trains in Glendale and is making his MMA debut.
The event is advertised to be televised on Fox Sports and aired on Combat Sports Radio.
As an advertised bonus, undefeated Glendale boxer Vanes Martirosyan and rising MMA star Karen Darabedyan are scheduled to be ringside commentators.
In other local boxing news, according to his management at Glendale Fighting Club, Jewel City boxer Gapo Tolmajyan is scheduled to face a to-be-determined opponent on April 10 in Rancho Mirage at the Agua Caliente Casino.
Tolmajyan’s GFC stablemate, Art Hovhannesyan, was also planning on fighting on the card, but reportedly suffered a hand injury in his last bout.
