School and store honored in Adopt-A-Block

Community pride was recently bestowed on R.D. White Elementary School and Whole Foods with an Adopt-A-Block plaque from the city of Glendale. For the past year, the school and market have dedicated at least one Saturday a month to keeping the neighborhood around the school trash free.

Special acknowledgment was given to Robert Struck, Kari Vanda and Kristin Pardo for initiating this school-business venture. The next Adopt-A-Block clean-up is at 11 a.m. April 17, weather permitting. Families and community members are encouraged to join the fun.

Horace Mann Elementary School has received the Urban Excellence in Education Award. It was one of 13 schools nationwide recognized. The Glendale Unified School District Board of Education will present the official award to school staff May 6.

Student PTA members graduating from a Glendale high school with a PTA in good standing should investigate the First District PTA Scholarship. Applications and details are at www.glendalepta.org/scholarships.html. Application deadline is noon April 13.

Lynn Miyamoto, Glendale Council PTA president, urges the community to attend the Crescenta Valley Drug and Alcohol Coalition’s first forum from 7 to 9 p.m. April 13 at Verdugo Hills Hospital. “Social Hosting” and “Binge Drinking” relating to children will be discussed.

“Home & School Discipline” is a free Parent University offered from 6 to 8 p.m. April 14 at R.D. White. “Differentiated Instruction & How It Assists Your Child to Learn” is the topic from 6 to 8 p.m. April 21 at John Muir Elementary School. Differentiated instruction teaches students at individual levels rather than at standardized levels that assume all students of a given age or grade are alike.

Glendale High School PTSA President Sydney Swainston celebrates what a terrific month March was by congratulating the 12th-grade class for sweeping Oratorical and the Scholastic Bowl Team for their win.

“We also thank all parents who came out during our Western Assn. of Schools and Colleges evaluations this past week,” she said. A major upcoming event is the Open House set for 6:30 p.m. April 22. All students and their families are invited.

Wilson Middle

PTSA memberships are 630 strong, with 295 from students alone — the highest number ever. Wilson’s Honors Band/Orchestra Concert is at 7 p.m. April 17 at Glendale High.
