Rain washes away games

More than 10 local events are postponed by bad weather Tuesday.

GLENDALE — When rain started to fall early Tuesday afternoon, St. Francis High tennis Coach Ron Zambrano began to inspect the courts at Fremont Tennis Center.

Zambrano, who also serves as the center’s professional, saw the courts had become slick. That proved to be the prevailing factor in Zambrano postponing a Mission League match between St. Francis and Crespi.

“If it rains, you can’t play tennis,” Zambrano said. “The court lines become too slippery and the balls are too wet.

“Plus, you can twist an ankle.”

St. Francis’ match was one of several postponed Tuesday. The poor weather forced athletic directors and assistant principals in charge of athletics to reschedule Tuesday’s events.

In all, four baseball games, three boys’ tennis matches and five softball contests were postponed Tuesday.

The Mission League game between St. Francis and Harvard-Westlake scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Field in Pasadena was postponed. Golden Knights Coach Brian Esquival said no makeup date had been established as of Tuesday, but that he hoped to play the game at Jackie Robinson either Friday or Saturday.

The other baseball games called off were Pacific League games between Crescenta Valley and host Pasadena and Burroughs at Glendale. It wasn’t clear when those contests will be made up.

Flintridge Prep traveled to Rio Hondo Prep for a Prep League game. The Rebels built a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a home run by Kyle McDonald, but the umpires halted the game in the middle of the inning. Flintridge Prep Athletic Director Alex Rivera said no make up date had been announced.

In addition to the St. Francis tennis match being postponed, a Pacific League match between visiting Hoover and Burroughs wasn’t played. Nor was the nonleague match between Crescenta Valley and host La Cañada.

Hoover Athletic Director Jack Van Patten and Peter Kim, assistant principal in charge of athletics, said makeup dates have not been determined, though the goal is to play them this week.
