Rally backs victims of domestic violence

Organizers for the Commission on the Status of Women and the Glendale YWCA will host their fifth annual Take Back the Night Rally tonight in public stand against violence against women.

The rally event starts 5:30 p.m. at the YWCA, 735 E. Lexington Drive, and then moves to Perkins Plaza at City Hall, 141 N. Glendale Ave. The event, which ends back at the YWCA at 7:30 p.m., will feature panel discussion, self-defense demonstration, reception and a short march demonstrating against violence against women.

GCC to host first State of the College

Glendale Community College Supt./President Dawn Lindsay today will deliver the State of the College address.

Lindsay was appointed to the to post earlier this year after serving on an interim basis. She inherited a college in turmoil and facing repeated state education cuts. Since then, Lindsay’s won praise for bringing stakeholders together, but the economic challenges facing the college remain.

Craig Levra, chief executive of Sport Chalet Inc., is also scheduled to speak at the event, kicking off the college’s business lecture series. Levra will discuss taking a proactive business approach even during a protracted recession.

The event is free and open to the public. The address runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the college auditorium.

Hospital foundation names president

The foundation for Glendale Adventist Medical Center has named a consulting executive as its new president.

Dro Abrahamian was a managing partner in Avenue 4 Advancement LLC, a nonprofit consulting firm, and president of Development Service Associates, a fundraising consulting practice.

He also has extensive health-care fundraising experience at St. John Health Foundation and the Beaumont Foundation in Michigan, according to an announcement from the foundation.

Morre Dean, president and chief executive of Glendale Adventist Medical Center, said in the statement that Abrahamian was brought on for his donor-centric fundraising philosophy that would “help us achieve our philanthropic goals.” The foundation is the philanthropic arm of the hospital.
