Sheriff’s helpers get recognition

Last year significantly tested the deputies and volunteers of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, said Capt. Dave Silversparre, Crescenta Valley Station Commander.

Two major accidents at Foothill Boulevard and Angeles Crest Highway, the Station fire and the resulting mudslides were events that “shook the community to its core,” Silversparre said.

The event was April 21 at the annual Crescenta Valley Volunteer and Reserve Recognition Dinner at the La Cañada Thursday Club headquarters in La Cañada. Awards recognized explorers, volunteers and Montrose Search and Rescue workers.

The winners included Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station Capt. Janet Henderson with Montrose Search and Rescue, who won the Bronze Figure-8 Award for achieving the goal of 500 search-and-rescue missions, and Alan Edwards, who won the silver Figure-8 Award for 750 rescue missions achieved.

Kevin Hughes was named the Montrose Search and Rescue volunteer of the year.

Ginger Hunnicutt was honored for volunteering more than 9,000 hours to the department.

Sheriff Explorer Katrina Herrera was named explorer of the year.
