GLENDALE — By virtue of playing their best tennis late in the season, a pair of Glendale Community College men’s doubles teams arrived on the doorstep of qualifying for the Community College State Playoffs.

For the teams of Emanuel Haug and Joey Tresierras and Dinusha Wijesuriya and Paul Nagapetyan, the possibility of moving to the state tournament beckoned. Unfortunately for each tandem, they ran into some of the top competition in the state.

Both Glendale squads saw their seasons end Friday afternoon by falling in a round-of-16 match at the Southern California Regionals at Cal State Northridge.

Haug and Tresierras suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Dave Thompson and Al Nichols of San Diego Mesa, while Wijesuriya and Nagapetyan fell, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, to Nikolay Ibanov and Regis Fastrez of Santa Barbara.

Had both Glendale teams won their respective matches, they would have qualified for the state playoffs. Each earned first-round byes before winning their second-round matches Thursday at CSUN.

“We had chances to win both matches, but they both were up against some talented teams,” veteran Glendale men’s Coach Bob MacKay said. “That’s the kind of good talent you face at this stage.”

MacKay said each Vaquero team tried to hold their own while pitted against two of the top-four seeds.

“With Paul and Dinusha, they got a little too far behind,” MacKay said. “They were the surprise team that just came up a little short and they had regained their composure by winning the second set.

“Joey and Emanuel did not have a very good first set. They had a chance to win the second set. I hope that both of our teams gained a lot of experience. I’m not disappointed because they lost to two seasoned teams.”

Glendale finished 6-11 and 3-5 in the Western State Conference this season.
