Mailbag: People open their hearts and pantries

For the last 18 years, the National Assn. of Letter Carriers has collected food for local food banks on the second Saturday in May. The Salvation Army Glendale has been fortunate enough to partner with the association locally for more than 10 years.

This Saturday started out like every other year. We had staff and volunteers at each local post office ready to help the letter carriers unload food from their vehicles. It didn’t take long for us to realize this was not going to be like every other year!

At the La Cañada Flintridge branch, the carriers collected three times more food than a year ago!

Across the city, at each branch, the story was the same. The people of Glendale opened their hearts and their cupboards like never before. We were, at times, literally overwhelmed by people’s generosity.

In February, we almost had to close the doors of our food pantry because the need was far greater than the supply. Because of your kindness, Glendale, we feel confident that we will have enough food to serve our community through the summer and into the fall.

Thank you to all who participated by leaving your food out for your letter carrier! Thanks you to all the volunteers.

And special appreciation to all the letter carriers who worked extra hard Saturday to help feed the hungry in our community.

You have all made a difference.

Gatto’s tactics have made up my mind

After reading Geri A. Mellgren-Kerwin’s April 28 letter, “Lessons can be learned from vote,” I was reminded of the old adage, that those who live in glass houses should not be throwing stones.

In her letter she attacks Nayiri Nahabedian for using negative campaign tactics. I don’t know which campaign she was following because Mike Gatto’s campaign took the cake in employing the worst kind of cynicism in promoting Chahe Keuroghelian.

I was shocked to receive a mailer paid for by Gatto’s campaign praising Keuroghelian as being a the “Owner of Keuroghelian Educational Center” and of being the “Former Public Information Officer for the Glendale Police Department.”
