Jay Edward Bondi, 77, of Glendale, died of cardiac arrest in La Roque Gagiac, France, while on vacation with his wife and close friends.

Bondi was born on Sept. 15, 1932, in Santa Monica, and spent his entire life in Southern California except for a two-year stint in the Army. His 50-year career at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory took him from machinist to draftsman to configuration management supervisor.

During 42 years of marriage, he and his wife, Carole, lived in the same house in Glendale, and have two surviving sons, Brett and Eric. Their first two children tragically died in a fire.

Jay Bondi served on the Glendale Water and Power Commission and taught at Glendale Community College for 10 years.

Bondi was described as loving traveling, with an affinity for spending time in and near bodies of water, especially Lake Tahoe. He enjoyed sailing, boating, fishing and snorkeling.

A celebration-of-life event at the von Karman Auditorium at Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
