Another feather

May 22, 2010

Not even the lobbying power of downtown Los Angeles has managed to win it a Trader Joe’s, and yet somehow, Glendale was able to woo a third store for the area.

The niche grocery store has long been talked of as an ideal candidate for anchoring the west end of the Montrose Shopping Park on Honolulu Avenue, where the mix of shops and geography has never really been a big draw for walking consumers.

Now, with news that a land lease deal between the grocer and the city is being finalized, fans and nearby store owners are no doubt eager for a quick turnaround.

Even if Trader Joe’s decides to close its cramped, outdated Foothill Boulevard store (company officials have said they have no current plans to do so), clearly, this location will more than make up for it.

It’s the latest business coup for Glendale city officials, and fresh example of how long term foresight really can pay off in the end.
