Jays' farm hand rises

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes in minor league baseball.

Al Quintana (Glendale Community College, 2002) New Hampshire Fisher Cats, third baseman: After batting .271 over 14 games with the Toronto Blue Jays' Class-A Advanced affiliate, the Dunedin Blue Jays, Quintana was promoted to the Double-A Fisher Cats on June 1.

Playing time with his new team hasn't been abundant — Quintana appeared in just two games since belting a three-run home run during a June 12 start against the Erie SeaWolves — but he did go one for three with a run batted in and a run scored in a 9-6 win over the Akron Aeros on Thursday to bring his average with the Fisher Cats up to .216.

On the year, Quintana is batting .247 with two homers, seven doubles, 15 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

New Hampshire was 41-26 as of Friday and a half a game out of first place in the Eastern League Eastern Division.

Jason Hirsh (St. Francis High, 2000) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees: Hirsh's return to the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees' starting rotation proved to be brief.

Although the right-hander's June 6 start, his first since May 23, went well, he was right back in the bullpen for his next appearance, a 4 1/3 inning stint of mop-up duty for starter Zachary McAllister, who was rocked for six runs in 2 1/3 innings in a 9-5 loss to the Charlotte on June 11.

Hirsh allowed three runs of his own, but bounced back in his most recent outing with two scoreless frames in relief Thursday.

Hirsh is 5-5 with a 4.22 earned-run average for Scranton Wilkes-Barre, which was 38-29 and a half a game out of first place in the International League North Division as of Friday.

Brandon McCarthy (Glendale native) Oklahoma City RedHawks pitcher: McCarthy was placed on the seven-day disabled list by the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers on June 10 with shoulder inflammation.

The injury slows a nice run for McCarthy who is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA in six games, including four starts this season. The RedHawks lead the Pacific Coast League American South Division.
