Charity League presents scholarships

National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter honored six local girls during a recent award reception at The Oakmont Country Club. Each young woman was presented with a $1,000 scholarship to further her education.

The girls were selected for their academic achievements, leadership skills, exceptional community service, and a history of volunteering.

The scholarship recipients are Ashlynn Fiss, a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School who will be attending UCLA, majoring in biology; Christine Garibian, a graduate of Glendale High School who will be attending UC Berkeley with a major in cognitive science; Lara Kumjian, graduate of Clark Magnet High School will be attending UC Irvine, majoring in biology; Rebecca Mendiola, a graduate of Daily High School, who will be attending Glendale Community College majoring in Dance and Business; Analilia Rodriguez, graduate of Hoover High School who will be attending Cal State Northridge, majoring in biology; Julia Rowe, a graduate of La Cañada High School and attending University of the Pacific and majoring in history and political science; and Rochelle Shabanian, a graduate of Glendale Community College and moving on to UCLA to major in psychology.

Glendale Scholarship Endowment awards presented

Six high school graduates from the Glendale schools received scholarship awards from the Glendale Scholarship Endowment.

Recipients are Esther Won Park, Eric Wall, Daniel Olson, Azaro Razikeen, John Rivera and Harmik Aghakhani.

The Glendale Scholarship Endowment awards are presented annually to needy and deserving graduates to continue their education after high school. The endowment was founded by the Sambar family to pay back to the community for the education and assistance given to Chuck Sambar who came to Glendale as an immigrant child 60 years ago.

Sambar attended the Glendale schools and after completing his college education, he served as a Glendale teacher and administrator for 35 years, and he was elected to three terms as a Glendale school board member and served as president of the Los Angeles County School Trustees Assn. Sambar credits the Glendale schools and its teachers and staff with his and his family's success.

During the past six years, The Glendale Scholarship Endowment has awarded more than $1 million dollars to 276 needy and deserving high school graduates. Donations to the endowment are made by individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations. All donations and annual scholarship awards are handled through the Community Foundation of the Verdugos, which invests and administers the endowment's funds and scholarship awards.
