SGV on to title game

GLENDALE — With their backs against the wall, the San Gabriel Valley 16-18 All-Stars responded with two victories on Monday evening to arrive in today's title game.

Having fallen against host Watsonville in their opening game of the tournament, the SGV All-Stars staved off elimination with a 2-0 win against Northern California to start Monday before finishing the night with an impressive 9-1 win over Central California in the loser's-bracket final of the Babe Ruth 16-18 Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament.

"The kids really played well today," said SGV Coach Phil Torres, who's also the Crescenta Valley High baseball coach.

SGV plays Watsonville at 5 p.m. today and should it win would force an if-necessary game shortly thereafter.

SGV wasted no time in jumping on Central California in the night cap, scoring two runs in the first, three in the second and two more in both the third and fourth.

"It was nice, we finally hit the ball a little bit," Torres said.

Crescenta Valley High products Troy Mulcahey and Nate Rousey each had a hit and a run in the onslaught, which saw SGV tally eight hits over the first three innings before scoring twice in the fourth with two outs without the benefit of the hit.

All the while, fellow CV player Elliott Surrey was cruising on the mound, nabbing the win with six shutout innings, striking our five and allowing just three hits. Fellow Falcons player Cameron Silva closed out the game with an inning of relief work

"The kids pitched well today," Torres said.

Earlier in the day, SGV edged past Northern California's East Sacramento.

Crescenta Valley graduate Sean Elliott, who's know playing at the University of Indianapolis, tossed three shutout innings in relief and also notched an RBI in the pivotal bottom of the sixth inning. In the sixth, Rousey reached base on a bunt single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a Martin Rodriguez single and subsequent error at the plate. Rodriguez later scored when Elliott drove him in.
