Taxi permits
The City Council approved awarding a five-year operating permit to City Cab after voting last month to overturn a commission decision to reduce the permit's length.
When City Cab's routine five-year permits came up for renewal, the commission voted to instead set the company to expire in 2013 in sync with the expiration date of the last operator permit. Commissioners said the decision could help create a more competitive process for doling out city taxi permits.
Any taxi can drop a passenger off in Glendale, but to pick up, they must have one of 81 city permits.
But City Council members sided with G&S Transit Management Inc., which runs City Cab, that a shorter permit could hurt its ability to convert its fleet to more environmentally friendly vehicles.
WHAT IT MEANS
City Cab is one of the city's five taxi operators. City transportation commissioners have in the past year expressed concern that the current permit process favors incumbent operators and that four of the five companies are under related ownership.
