Winds bring power outages

GLENDALE — Gusty winds on Thursday caused power outages and toppled trees, causing messes throughout the day.

A large tree limb in the 700 block of East Broadway fell onto a parked vehicle, while a pine tree collapsed and destroyed two parked cars in the 4100 block of Lauderdale Avenue, said Steve Zurn, Glendale public works director.

The pine tree was on private property, so the property owner was responsible for removing it, city spokeswoman Vicki Gardner said. City crews repaired a power line that was damaged by the tree.

Roughly 4,000 Glendale Water and Power customers lost power after strong wind gusts caused tree branches and leaves to fall on several electrical feeders, said Ramon Abueg, the utility's electrical services administrator. The utility quickly restored power to all customers, he added.

There are 88,000 electricity customers in the city, according to Glendale Water & Power.

Northwest Glendale residents reported the first outage about 3:39 a.m. on Hazel, Fifth, Willard, Truitt and Concord streets and Glenview, Arden and Justin avenues, said Ramon Abueg, the utility's electrical services administrator.

Power was restored to those residents in roughly 10 minutes, he said.

The second outage occurred about 5:53 a.m. in Montrose and also lasted about 10 minutes.

The third outage, which lasted about 20 minutes, occurred about 7:38 a.m. in the Rossmoyne area, Abueg said.

A wind advisory issued by the National Weather Service remained in effect for most of the day, but strong winds were forecast throughout the week.

Fallen tree limbs were also reported on Glorietta Avenue, Cañada Boulevard and the 3200 block of Community Avenue, Zurn said.

Santa Ana winds were strongest in hills, canyons and passes, and some gusts were expected to reach 60 mph, according to the weather agency.
