Organizations: Trevor Fritz completes Eagle Scout Project

November 13, 2010

Boy Scout Trevor Fritz, 16, just completed his Eagle Scout Project. Trevor is a junior at Glendale High School and has been a member of Troop 125 in Glenoaks Canyon for five years. On Oct. 30, with the help of his troop, he installed two commercial-quality 8-foot park benches at Seven Trees Plateau, located about a mile above Brand Park.

There is no vehicle access to Seven Trees Plateau, so the logistics of getting all the work materials to the site was quite challenging. The success of this project was due to the help of many people who all came together and lent either their expertise, helping hands or financial support.

Trevor began working with Jeff Weinstein and Dave Moreno of Glendale Parks and Recreation about a year ago. After developing the idea, they needed to address financing the project. Some friends donated money, plus Trevor held a couple of fundraising movie nights, and also held a few Saturday afternoon snack stands, which helped him earn a good portion of the funds. His final funds were provided throughdonations of Johnny Harrison from Lexus of Glendale and also from Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation.

On Oct. 30, after a night of torrential downpour, the skies cleared, allowing Trevor and his fellow Scouts and parents from Glendale's Troop 125 to set out from Brand Park with the help of Park Ranger Dave Moreno. Through the help of these 21 volunteers, they were able to hike and carry up 12 60-pound bags of cement, 16 gallons of water, components for two benches weighing 64 pounds each, buckets, shovels, pick axes, supports, etc.

Many of the workers made multiple trips up and down the trail laden with the necessary supplies. By early afternoon, the benches were installed and left to set in the wet concrete. One week later, on Nov. 6, the completed benches were unveiled. Hikers will now find a place on top of Seven Hills Plateau where they can sit and enjoy the view overlooking Burbank, Glendale, Downtown Los Angeles and on a clear day, Catalina Island.
