Lori Hartwell is founder of the Renal Support Network, which is a patient-oriented and patient-run non-medical support group for patients with chronic kidney disease. Hartwell has had kidney disease since age 2.
Ann M. Herrmann is an elementary school teacher who has devoted her efforts to Cabrini Literary Guild and other projects supporting literacy for women, advancing educational opportunities, raising money for scholarships for students and books for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Elizabeth Manasserian has devoted herself to improving life for women and children in our community through her service with Glendale Healthy Kids and serving on the Commission on the Status of Women in Glendale.
Ellyn Semler has helped needy children and adults in the community through Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services and Hillside School.
Two young women will receive the Jane O’Connor Community Service Volunteers Awards.
Casey Ann Meurer, a senior at Flintridge Prep in La Cañada Flintridge, gave her time to obtain and fund the shipping of 1,000 boxes of school books, school supplies and athletic supplies to school children in Nigeria.
Makhyla Arden Pelayo, a senior at John Burroughs High School in Burbank, performed more than 400 hours of volunteering to Child S.H.A.R.E. and to the Braille Institute.

Trivia event supports literacy program
The Trivia Challenge 2011, presented by the Friends of the Burbank Public Library, will be held Thursday at the Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road, Burbank. Social time is at 6:30 p.m. with silent auction and appetizer and dessert buffet, followed by the challenge at 7 p.m.
