Police crack down on speeders

More than 70 motorists were cited over the weekend in a citywide speed enforcement effort in which drivers were caught reaching speeds of up to 63 mph on city streets, police reported.

Six Glendale police officers were assigned to the enforcement detail from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday on city streets in mostly Northwest Glendale, Sgt. Dennis Smith said.

Police cited 75 drivers for speeding, including one motorist for traveling at 63 mph and several others who were traveling at more than 50 mph on Victory Boulevard, he said. The speed limit on Victory Boulevard is 35 mph.

The operation, funded by a state grant, was aimed at reducing the number of speeding motorists and speed-related traffic collisions, Smith said.

About 18% of Glendale’s traffic collisions are related to speeding, he said.

DUI drivers, speeding and pedestrian-involved collisions have been some of the Glendale Police Department's most pressing concerns.

Some witnesses said speed may have been a factor in a fatal hit-and-run collision last January.

Joo Lee, 49, was crossing Montrose Avenue at about 7:14 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2010, when he was struck and killed by a motorist who fled the scene.

Police have made no arrests in connection with the fatal collision.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors last week extended a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver.
