Falcons go late into night

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — What started as a game of baseball turned in to a game of beat the clock for Cam Silva and the Crescenta Valley High baseball team.

Well into extra innings and pushing up fast on Stengel Field's 10:30 p.m. curfew at which point the lights were set to go out, Silva stroked a double to the deepest part of the park in center field to score Tyler Pollak, who had also doubled off Pasadena reliever Ives Brown to give the Falcons a 4-3 come-from-behind Pacific League win over the Bulldogs in 10 innings Friday night.

"It felt great," Silva said. "The funny thing was I was just going up there to get a slash, but good things happen when you are thinking about hitting the ball."

Pasadena took a 3-1 lead on a double high off the left-field fence by Jay Cordero in the top of the ninth, but the Falcons answered back in their half.

Kyle Pomeroy, who picked up the win in relief after retiring Pasadena (12-9-1, 5-5) in the top of the 10th with runners on the corners, bounced a base hit through the right side of the infield with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to score Cole Currie and Elliott Surrey to keep the game going.

The Falcons (23-2, 12-1) won the game by coming up clutch at the plate, but for most of the game, their offense was anything but.

Three Pasadena pitchers limited Crescenta Valley to one run on seven hits over the first eight innings, a span which saw the Falcons leave 11 runners on base.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the second on a double to right by Silva that scored Pomeroy. Silva had two hits and also gunned down three runners on the base paths from behind the plate.

Crescenta Valley starter Kyle Murray lost a no-hit and a shutout bid when Pasadena's Gio Cabral singled up the middle to drive in Robert Lain, who had walked, to tie the game at 1.

Murray would continue to go strong until the seventh, when he walked the lead-off batter and was relieved by Pomeroy, who pitched the final three innings.
