Obituary: Robert Nelson McReynolds

Robert Nelson McReynolds, Jr. of Montrose died May 18 after a long illness. He was 75.

Born in Indianapolis, Ind. on Dec. 14, 1935, he lived most of his life in Southern California.

After becoming an all-league pitcher at Glendale High School, McReynolds was approached by major league organizations but elected to serve in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Oklahoma.

After completion of his military service, he was married to Betty Virginia Stover in 1956 and settled in Montrose for the remainder of his life.

Well-known in the area as a coach of youth sports, he led more than 20 baseball teams at most every level between 1968 and 1990. He also served as league president in the T-ball and Little League divisions of the Crescenta Valley Little League. During that time McReynolds pitched in men’s fast-pitch softball leagues and was an avid bowler.

McReynolds worked for Culligan Water, the Herald Examiner newspaper and UPS before retiring in 1995.

He is survived by Betty, his wife of 55 years; sons Chris and Cary; daughter Robin; his sister Warrene; 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Wee Kirk O’ the Heather at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Glendale on May 21.
