Suspect eludes police after bank robbery

GLENDALE — For the second time in as many days, a man dodged police Wednesday as they responded to calls that he robbed a downtown bank. The only difference the second time was he made off with cash.

The robbery occurred at the U.S. Bank in the 600 block of North Brand Boulevard about 2:15 p.m. when the man passed the teller a note that said “It’s a robbery” and fled through the back door with cash, officials said.

No injuries were reported.

An FBI spokeswoman described the suspect as a Filipino man in his late 40s, 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 5, with short black hair, a medium build and wearing a black T-shirt and sunglasses.

U.S Bank representatives declined to comment and referred inquiries to police.

On Tuesday, a man attempted to rob the Citibank down the street after a taxi dropped him off. That attempt failed and fled out the back exit, but police were unable to track him down.

Officials could not immediately confirm both robberies were connected, but the suspect in the Citibank incident on Tuesday passed a demand note that stated “This bank is being robbed,” according FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

The man arrived at the bank in the 700 block of North Brand Boulevard about 4:12 p.m. by taxi and asked the driver to wait while he went inside the building, police said.

The man in the Citibank incident was described as 35 to 40 years old, about 5 feet 7, and as being Latino or black. Police said he was wearing khaki shorts, a gray jacket and a baseball cap.

“They have not been linked at this time, but it is still under investigation, whether it is the same person,” Eimiller said.
