Another mountain lion sighting reported in Burbank hillside

Burbank police today issued another public safety alert after residents 900 block of Country Club Drive reported seeing a mountain lion.

The sighting was reported at 9:15 p.m. on Monday as the lion was heading back into the nearby hillside in Northwest Burbank, according to police.

Several mountain lions have been reported in the Burbank hillsides this summer, prompting warnings from officials to keep pet food indoors and to avoid hiking or jogging alone, especially at dawn or dusk, when the big cats are more active.

Earlier this month, police reported seeing a mountain lion walking among parked cars further north in the area near Kenneth Road and Brown Drive.

Police re-issued safety precautions from the California Department of Fish and Game:

  1. Do not feed deer; it is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
  2. Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.
  3. Don’t allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  4. Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums and other potential mountain lion prey.
  5. Do not leave small children or pets outside unattended.
  6. Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house.
  7. Do not hike, bike, or jog alone.
  8. Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  9. Do not approach a mountain lion.
  10. If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
  11. If attacked, fight back.
  12. If a mountain lion attacks a person, immediately call 911.

Officials urged the public to contact the Burbank Police Department directly at (818) 238-3000 or the Burbank Animal Shelter (818) 238-3340 to report mountain lion sightings.
