Enjoying the chocolate fountain at the Physicians Appreciation…

Several times a year, the doctors at Glendale Adventist Medical Center are feted. This summer’s Physicians Appreciation Luncheon had a Hawaiian theme. On Aug. 31, doctors were decked out in Hawaiian shirts and leis instead of clinic jackets. A buffet was bursting with healthy food, but dessert was distinctly not what the doctor ordered. A fountain overflowed with chocolate, full of calories and artery cloggers. Of course, there were plenty of strawberries to dip into the chocolate, but, for many, the fruit was simply a conveyance for the chocolate, and plenty of it.

Interim Chief Executive Warren Tetz dipped into the chocolate sparingly. Tetz, temporarily replacing former Chief Executive Morre Dean, has been on the job for only a month. But Tetz knows his stuff. He has been chief operating officer at Glendale Adventist for the last 11 years. At the moment he’s juggling both roles.

Tetz, good-naturedly, posed for photos at the chocolate fountain. He was joined by Dr. Sam Daneshvari, medical director of North Glendale’s Davita Dialysis Center. Dr. Sara Kim also had a taste of the chocolate. Kim is the medical director of radiation-oncology at Glendale Adventist.

Doctors with a sweet tooth are looking forward to future Appreciation Luncheons. The Christmas lunch will feature turkey and pies. Next year’s heart-themed Valentine’s Day lunch will bring back the chocolate.

Also on Aug. 31, a special sort of reunion was on tap. The Granville Café in the Americana was the setting for pre-dinner appetizers and libations for alumnae members of Glendale’s Commission on the Status of Women.

Current Commission Chairwoman Paula Devine was joined by former Commissioners Elizabeth Manasserian, Susan Hunt, Linda Goodman Pillsbury, Lena Bozoyan and staffers City Senior Assistant Attorney Lucy Varpetian and City Senior Analyst Lana Haddad. Also joining the group was Suzy Jacobs who had worked closely with some of the former commissioners. Jacobs was a former staff member to Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Silver Lake).

The early-evening festivities ended by toasting each alum and staffer, recognizing their many contributions to Glendale.

Another Aug. 31 activity ended the month with a bang (of the cash registers). Early-bird bargain shoppers waited in the parking lot for the 10 a.m. opening of the Glendale Assistance League’s Thrift Alley.
