Local unemployment rates fall even as statewide picture worsens

Local unemployment rates uniformly dropped in August, even as the number of jobless claims rose statewide, according to state data released today.

In Burbank, the jobless rate dropped from 10.8% in July, to 10.3% in August, according to the state Economic Development Department.

In Glendale, the rate dropped from 11.6% to 11.1% during the same period.

The unemployment rate in Pasadena also dropped, from 10.2% in July to 9.7% in August, according to the state.

Statewide, the unemployment rate actually increased during the same month-to-month period, from 12% to 12.1%, as employers slashed 8,400 positions last month, according to the Employment Development Department.

In the Montrose-La Crescenta area, unemployment fell from 6.6% to 6.3%. In South Pasadena and San Marino, the rates were 6.3% and 5.8%, respectively.
