Vaqueros take first at Orange Coast

Glendale Community College in Orange Coast Classic: The Vaqueros ran away with first place in the Orange Coast Classic on Saturday with 27 points — 39 points ahead of second place Orange Coast. The Vaqueros had seven runners place in the top 15 of the 5,000-meter race.

Karen Rosas and Alyssa Selve took first and second place overall for Glendale. Rosas finished in 18:05.47 and Selve was clocked at 18:08.92. Angela Martinez wasn't far off, taking fourth place in 18:18.77.


Laura Pluemer took ninth (18:14.94), Grace Graham-Zamudio came in at 11th (18:47.53), Nohemi Martinez was 13th (18:51.91) and Cecilia Nicolas was the last Vaquero to crack the top 15, finishing 14th in 18:51.91.


Glendale Community College in Orange Coast Classic: The Vaqueros were unable to take first place in the Orange Coast Classic at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa on Saturday, but they did have the top individual finisher overall, Mizrael Mendez.

The Vaqueros came in third with 84 points. San Bernardino College was first with 43 points and Orange Coast took second with 76 points. Mendez captured first place overall, running the four-mile course in 20:21.40.

Jesus Gutierrez was about 20 seconds behind Mendez, taking fifth place in 20:43.22. Kurt Lutz also squeezed his way into the top 15 Saturday, taking 15th in 21:05.15. Nicholas Marquez and Isaac Diosdado rounded out Glendale's top five. Marquez came in 29th (21:24.33) and Diosdado came in 34th (21:29.74).


Immaculate Heart 25, Bellarmine-Jefferson 22: The Guards were defeated in the Gold Division quarterfinals of the Burbank Tournament on Saturday. Immaculate Heart won the championship.

Burbank 25, Calabasas 23: The host Bulldogs won the Silver Division championship in the Burbank Tournament on Saturday.

Burbank defeated Quartz Hill, 25-20, in the quarterfinals and Jurupa Valley, 27-25, in the semifinals.

Calabasas 25, Holy Family 19: The Gaels were eliminated in the Silver Division semifinal round of the Burbank Tournament on Saturday.


Woodbridge Invitational: St. Francis, Hoover and Glendale all posted solid efforts at Friday's first day of the Woodbridge Invitational in Division IV action.

St. Francis' Collin Peterson paced the Golden Knights in the senior race to an 11th place finish by taking ninth in 15 minutes and 45 seconds.
