Glendale Adventist Medical Center has hired a new chief executive, hospital officials announced Thursday.

Kevin Roberts, who hails from Hawaii, will take over as president and chief executive on Dec. 5.

He replaces Morre Dean, who resigned in June to become chief executive at Parker Adventist Hospital in Parker, Colo., south of Denver.

Roberts said he’s excited to join Glendale Adventist.

“It’s the flagship for Adventist Health, so to be invited to serve in that capacity is an extraordinary honor and privilege — and, of course, responsibility,” he said.

Roberts is currently chief executive at Castle Medical Center in Kailua, Hawaii. The hospital is part of the Adventist Health system.

Before that, he was chief operating and nursing officer at South Coast Medical Center in Laguna Beach. He also worked at Adventist Health’s corporate offices as director of clinical operations.

Roberts has been at Castle Medical Center for seven years, during which he oversaw several construction projects, including a new three-story patient tower and expanded emergency room and imaging center.

He also led the way to build an ambulatory surgical center in a joint venture with 15 physicians.

“That’s a big deal,” Roberts said. “Doctors don’t usually write checks.”

A registered nurse, Roberts decided to pursue a master’s degree in health care administration later in his career, which led to his many executive positions.

“CEOs come in all shapes and sizes and backgrounds,” he said.

In a statement, Robert G. Carmen, president and chief executive of Adventist Health and chairman of the board, praised Roberts' service and track record.

“His distinct blend of clinical and administrative leadership, coupled with long-standing commitment to our mission, will serve [Glendale Adventist] and its community well,” Carmen said.
