A $300,000 state-funded grant will help Glendale purchase 10 new compressed-natural gas trash trucks, city officials announced Tuesday.

The clean-burning fuel cuts down significantly on the amount of toxins and particulate matter emitted from their diesel counterparts.

The grant from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee, which funds clean air projects for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, is the second for Glendale. The committee awarded the city $325,000 in 2009.

So far, more than half the city’s 50 refuse trucks and street sweepers operate on compressed-natural gas, according to the city.
