Remembering cherished neighbors

November 09, 2011

Thank you for publishing the article on Ernie and Alta Abbott (“Library card photo had family connection,” Nov. 1).

My parents lived on Adams Street, next door to the Ernie and Alta, from the middle 1930s to when they all passed away. My brother and I played in their yard and home as if it was our own, with swings, a basketball hoop, a basement, multiple porches, a garage and lots of closets for hide and seek.

The Abbott kids were grown by the late 1950s when we were kids, but the Abbott grandchildren were over often and joined our neighborhood gang.

The Abbotts were kind, hard working, money saving, Christian people. Ernie even taught me to drive in his brand new Buick. My father thought Ernie a little foolish to trust me that way at 15 1/2 years old, but I didn't bang it up.

I miss them all.
