Bicyclists got their own parking structure Monday at the Metrolink station in downtown Burbank -- a secure building with 40 parking stalls, a repair stand and other features that officials say should entice more people to use public transit.
A longtime gripe among cyclists in the L.A. region has been the lack of accommodations for their bikes at public transit hubs, but Burbank and state transportation officials on Monday touted the so-called Bike Stop a major leap in convenience.
The downtown Burbank Metrolink station is busy a hub for commuters from Antelope Valley and those working in Glendale and Los Angeles. The Bike Stop -- partially funded by the California Department of Transportation -- gives bicyclists a spot to park their bikes for free, instead of having to lug their equipment around from station to station.
The building comes equiped with a video surveillance system. Registered users will get an access code in advance to enter the facility and lock their bikes, officials said.
