Burbank reaches long-sought deal with police union

December 16, 2011

Burbank officials today announced that they have reached a tentative agreement with the police officers union on a new contract.

Details of the deal were not disclosed, but the two sides have been negotiating since the prior contract expired in 2009.

In a statement, Mayor Jess Talamantes said both sides have shown "respect and commitment throughout this process and we believe the result is in the best interest of the citizens of Burbank."

Terms of tentative agreement were slated to be unveiled when the City Council takes up the deal for official approval in the coming weeks. But most public employee unions have been forced to make concessions this year as cities grapple with the impacts of a protracted recession.

For many, that has meant increased employee contributions to pensions -- the heaviest financial burden for most cities.

Sgt. Claudio Losacco, vice president of the Burbank Police Officers Assn., said salary, benefits and working conditions were discussed, but not even union members are privy to the specifics at this point.

The membership is expected to vote on the tentative agreement the week of Dec. 26, Losacco said. After that, the council will discuss the matter in open session.

"The [Burbank Police Officers Assn.] is very aware of the economic difficulties Burbank and other municipalities are facing in light of the economy and are pleased to be part of the effort to find solutions to those issues,” Union President Mark Armendariz said in a statement.  “The association and city negotiating teams worked very hard for quite some time to reach common ground."
