2 Burbank fires may be related to rash of L.A.-area blazes

Two fires in Burbank early Saturday morning -- one that consumed a car, the other at an auto repair shop -- may be related to the rash of car blazes hitting the L.A. area, officials say.

The two fires broke out within hours of each other and at around the same time that approximately nine fires were reported in the North Hollywood and Sun Valley areas.

They could be tied to the arson fires reported in West Hollywood and Hollywood Thursday night, according to fire officials.

A car fire was reported around 2:20 a.m. in the 2100 block of Rose Street, near the North Hollywood/Sun Valley border, according to Burbank Fire Marshal Frank Walbert.

The car was parked in front of a home and near a carport, which was damaged in the blaze, Walbert said.

The home was not damaged and there were no injuries, he added.

Earlier in the night, a structure fire erupted around 1 a.m. inside an auto repair shop in the 2800 block of San Fernando Road in Burbank, Walbert said

There was extensive damage to the building's interior and its contents, he said.

The fire was suspicious because it appeared the front door had been forced open, he added.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities investigating a string of more than 35 fires set over the last two days told the Los Angeles Times that they strongly suspect the blazes are the work of more than one arsonist.

On Friday morning, 21 fires were started in a relatively small area around Hollywood and West Hollywood. On Friday night and Saturday morning, 16 more fires were reported. They were similar to the ones in Hollywood but were spread out over a much larger area.

Eight of the fires occurred in North Hollywood, three in the foothill area of the San Fernando Valley, three in the Wilshire Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, one on the Westside and one in Lennox.
