Mal Giaimo 94, a resident of La Canada since 1952 died New Year’s Eve surrounded by his family. Mal the son of Graziella Bongiorno and Gaetano Giaimo, was born in 1917 in Patterson New Jersey. The Giaimo’s moved to Los Angeles in 1919.
He met his wife Bebe Greer while stationed in El Paso during World War II, they returned to Los Angeles when the war ended. After working for Myers Bros., Mal struck out on his own -- starting his own business. He built residential and commercial buildings throughout Southern California, including several homes in La Canada and did projects for Miller Brewing, Helms Bakery—later to become Orowheat, and Altadena Dairy to name a few. His last job was completed for Miller Brewing at the spritely age of 93.
Mal was a dedicated father, fantastic grandfather, loving brother, favorite uncle and the best neighbor you could ask for. He was still offering neighbors his services and counsel regarding home maintenance weeks before his death. He enjoyed seeing how the rest of the world lived, so traveled extensively. Mal loved to dance and play his classic Steinway grand piano, he often entertained at the Italian club Garobaldina where he was a member.
