Fee increase for dog license too steep

January 23, 2012

I am shocked and appalled that dog license fees have gone up $10 per dog. When I called to question this, I was told this was the City Council’s doing.

Apparently none of them own dogs! I have four dogs (all rescues), plus a kennel permit. That means the cost of having four dogs just went up by $40. This may not seem like a lot of money to a City Council member, but for the average person or someone on a fixed income, $40 is several meals for a couple or two bags of food for the dogs or grooming appointments.

For the last 10 years, I have paid my fees as any law-abiding citizen would do, but now I feel like I am being punished for doing the right thing. I should have never licensed the dogs, just like everyone else in my neighborhood.

Times are tough right now and people are cutting back, the last thing people need is another $10 per dog added to their plate. This is probably the most unfriendly dog city in the state — we don’t even have a dog park.

People will think twice before adopting dogs from shelters if the licensing fees are high. I think this increase is excessive.

Does anyone else agree?
