The world lost an outstanding citizen when Fred A Zerman passed away on December 24, 2011. Fred’s legacy as a family man, baseball coach, and patriot will long be remembered.  He will be missed by his daughter, Colleen, grandchildren Jozef, Jonathan, Anneke and Jacqueline de Vries, Jillian and Dru Duncan and 3 great-grandchildren.  His wife of 57 years, Jean, and daughter, Cindy, predeceased him. Fred was born on Nov. 9, 1921, in Glendale and graduated in 1939 from Hoover High School.  He attended Washington State University then graduated from USC after serving in the Coast Guard during WWII.  He and Jean married in 1948 and raised two daughters in Glendale. He had a 35 year career as a stockbroker retiring from Morgan Stanley in 1988.  He was a USC and Kappa Sigma Alumni, a founding member of Hoover’s Athletic Booster Club and a Connie Mack Baseball coach for 10 years. A 35 year member, past president and Man of the Year for Gateway Kiwanis, Fred initiated and remained involved in the Babe Herman Invitation Baseball Tournament for 30 years. Although baseball was his passion, he bowled and was an avid fisherman and golfer. The Zerman’s were actively involved grandparents rarely missing a game, recital or banquet.   At 75 years old, he coached his grandson’s baseball team in Anchorage, Ak!  In 2000 the Zerman’s moved to Irvine and in 2005 to Rossmoor Towers in Laguna Woods where Jean passed six months later.  In 2009, Fred moved to Arizona to be closer to family where he enjoyed living on a golf course.  Though his health declined over the next two years he celebrated his 90th birthday with almost all of his family present. He passed away peacefully on Dec. 24, 2011 with Colleen at his side.  A memorial celebration of his life will be held Sat. Feb. 18, 2012 at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills at 12 noon.  In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity in the name of Fred A. Zerman.
