CV ladies in playoff action

The following are previews of today's CIF Southern Section division playoff games involving local teams.

GIRLS' WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley at Los Altos, Noon: The third-seeded Falcons (30-0) started the Division V playoffs on the right note Wednesday with a 19-6 win against Fontana at South Pasadena High. Crescenta Valley, which captured the Pacific League championship, got four goals from Sabrina Hatzer in the victory.

Los Altos (16-15) earned an 18-10 opening-round victory against visiting Riverside Notre Dame. Los Altos is led by Stephanie Contreras, who scored a CIF Southern Section record 188 goals in 2010. Los Altos took second in the Hacienda League, but has been defeated twice this season by the Falcons.

The winner will take on second-seeded Temescal Canyon or Walnut in a semifinal match at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Mount San Antonio College.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley at Katella, 7 p.m.: Crescenta Valley, which finished tied for fourth place in the Pacific League, but lost a tiebreaker, received an at-large berth in the Division I-A playoffs. The Falcons (15-11) figure to face a tough test from ninth-seeded Katella, which is 19-8. Katella captured the Orange League championship.

The victor will take on eighth-seeded Downey or Trabuco Hills in a second-round contest Wednesday.
