GCC nabs pair of 2nd-place finishes

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Western State Conference Meet: Glendale's women's team took second with 102 points at Friday's meet at Moorpark College.

West Los Angeles won the meet with 149 points and Moorpark (95) was third.

Lilia Asserian won the 800-meter race in 2 minutes 8.19 seconds.

In the 3,000, Cecilia Nicolas took third in 11:03.02, while teammate Charlene Quintanilla (11:04.31) took third. In the pole vault, Vaqueros also went second and third, with Melissa Cruz notching a mark of 8 feet 6 1/4 inches, while Darcy Coto turned in an identical mark and was given third. Justice Shank jumped 5-1 3/4 for second in the high jump, while Flores Cardenas was third (1:11.07) in the 400 hurdles and Jennifer Mendoza was third (72-8 1/2).

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College at Western State Conference Meet: The Vaqueros finished second with 98 points to host and first-place Moorpark (118 points) on Friday. Santa Monica had 95 points for third.

Isaac Diosdado won the 3,000 in 9 minutes 1.12 seconds, while Mario Castillo brought home first in the 800 in 1:59.53. Jason Ahn won the javelin with a throw of 172 feet.

Alec Nelson was second in the 800 in 2:01.4 and second in the 1,500 in 4:06.42, while Mizrael Mendez was third in the 1,500 in 4:07.46.

Robert Pulido was second in the hammer throw at 129-9 feet, David Renteria was second in the javelin at 152-1 and Michael Matienzo finished third in the triple jump at 40-8 3/4 and Nick La Croix was third in the shot put at 42-4.

BASEBALL

Glendale 2, Village Christian 1 (nine innings): Jason Marquez started the game-winning sequence on the basepaths and also threw a complete game over nine innings with just 99 pitches, striking out eight to earn the Nitros' first win of the year in Friday's nonleague tilt at Glendale.

"It was a pretty intense game," Glendale Coach Jesus Osuna said.

Marquez stole second in the bottom of the ninth and the Village Christian catcher tried to pick off Dillon Howard at third in the sequence, but the throw hit Howard's head and Howard scored the game-winner on the error.

Daniel Aragon scored the Nitros' first run off a Hosue Aguilera infield single.
