Glendale to host another meeting on outdoor dining fees

A second meeting will be held Monday so local restaurant owners can weigh in on the options Glendale has created for sidewalk dining fees after an unpopular fee spike last year that was later shelved.

After only seven people attended an evening meeting in March, the city decided to schedule a morning meeting in hopes that more restaurateurs would attend because it’s a slower time for their businesses.

The meeting on Monday will be held at 10 a.m. in Room 105 of the Municipal Services Building, 633 E. Broadway.

The new options for sidewalk dining include a flat rate, while others have add-on fees based on the number of tables, chairs or square footage.

With the flat-rate option, restaurant owners would pay $450 initially with an annual renewal rate of $250.

Due to the sluggish economy, city officials proposed that the initial fee be $300 with $50 increases over the next three years until it reaches $450.

All of the other options would have a $150 initial flat fee and a $50 annual renewal, with extra costs added to both the initial fee and renewal.

The options were crafted after an unpopular move to set the fees at $650 sparked major pushback and pompted City Hall to go back to the drawing board.

One option would add $15 per chair, while another would tack on $50 per table.
