It may have been a short stay for Trevor Campbell and Grayson Frazier in the Southern California Regionals, but it likely didn't feel that way for the Glendale Community College No. 1 men's doubles team.

Not after a grueling two-and-a-half hour match ended the tandem's season in a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) loss to Saddleback College's Sena Sharifi and Pedro Campos in the round of 16 at Irvine Valley College.

"[We're] definitely [disappointed]," Campbell said. "But we competed.

"It was a good match, we played well. It got hot at some points, but it was good competition."

Campbell and Frazier suffered a key service break late in the second set and then Sharifi and Campos held their serve to even the match.

Then, trailing, 5-3, in the third set, Campbell and Frazier rallied to tie force the tiebreaker.

"They're a good team, they played well, we played well and it just came down to scoring points — some of them we didn't capitalize on," Frazier said. "But it was a good match, I enjoyed it.

"We had some opportunities."

A win in the round of 16 would have automatically qualified Campbell and Frazier for the state tournament, which will be played at Balboa Tennis Club in San Diego beginning on Wednesday.

"It was a tough match, our guys played well," Glendale Coach Bob MacKay said. "It was a close match, they were a good team. They found a way to win the match. ...They were just a better team."

Campbell and Frazier opened the regionals on Thursday with a second-round win over Palomar College's Nick Bauer and Brandon Crist, 6-1, 6-1. The Vaqueros duo enjoyed a first-round bye.

Neither player was able to advance past Thursday in singles competition, as Campbell lost to Mount San Antonio College's Alex Miele, 6-2, 6-0, in the second round and Frazier was eliminated by San Diego Mesa College's Gio Valdez, 7-6 (6), 6-1, in the first round.

Campbell notched a first-round win over Yasuto Miyawaki of El Camino College.
