Former GCC player Ryan Sherriff shines with Palm Beach Cardinals

The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level.

Ryan Sherriff (Glendale Community College, 2011) starting pitcher, Palm Beach Cardinals: Sherriff, who helped the Vaqueros reach the state playoffs for the first time in the program's history in 2011, continues to impress with Palm Beach since being promoted May 20 to the Class-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals of the Florida State League.

Sherriff, a left-hander who began the season with the Class-A Short Season New York-Penn League Muckdogs, struck out five and allowed two runs (one earned) over six innings to help Palm Beach record a 6-2 road victory against the Fort Myers Miracle on Friday. He faced 22 batters and lowered his earned-run average to 2.77.

Since being summoned by Palm Beach, Sherriff is 2-0. He's struck out six and allowed eight hits in 13 innings.

The Cardinals are 24-27 and in third place in the league's South Division entering Wednesday's game against the St. Lucie Mets.

Bryan Longpre (Crescenta Valley High, 2005), relief pitcher, Dunedin Blue Jays: Longpre hasn't allowed a run through his first four appearances with Dunedin, the Class-A advanced team of the Toronto Blue Jays in the Florida State League. The right-hander has struck out three and allowed one hit in 3 2/3 innings.

In Longpre's most recent outing on Sunday against the Brevard County Manatees, Longpre pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Dunedin's 12-5 home win. On Friday against the Manatees, Longpre, a Cal State Northridge graduate, got two outs in the eighth inning to help the Blue Jays record a 7-4 home victory.

The Blue Jays are 34-17 and in first place in the league's North Division entering Wednesday's game against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) starting pitcher, Modesto Nuts: The former All-Area Player of the Year honoree returned to Southern California and snapped a two-game losing skid with a stellar effort Sunday against the host Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Bergman, a right-hander who graduated from UC Irvine, allowed one run and four hits and struck out four to propel Modesto to a 6-1 victory.

Bergman got four ground outs and 10 fly balls while facing 27 batters to improve to 5-4 and reduce his ERA to 3.12. In 10 appearances, all starts, Bergman has struck out 44 and allowed 25 runs (21 earned) in 60 2/3 innings.
