Glendale motorist stopped after hitting 80 mph on city street

Glendale police arrested a 17-year-old motorist Tuesday morning after she was allegedly caught driving 80 mph on a city street — and putting down 100-feet worth of skid marks when she tried to stop at a red light, officials said.

The motorist, whose name wasn't immediately available, was speeding in her Mercedes just after 8 a.m. on Broadway when she was spotted by a police officer, who tried to catch up with her, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

She tried to slow down as she approached a red light on Brand Boulevard, but instead drove through it, leaving 100 feet of skid marks on the road, Lorenz added.

“It was definitely reckless,” he said. “Definitely, no clear thinking on her part.”

The officer was finally able to get to the motorist just before Colorado Street, Lorenz said.

She told the officer that damage to the back end of the car was caused earlier in the morning by a car that was making a left on Isabel Street.

She didn’t stop after the collision because she was afraid her parents would take the car away since she had crashed it on Monday in a subterranean parking garage, Lorenz said.

She was released on her own recognizance.
