Making room for bikes and cars

July 24, 2012

Having recently returned from bicycle-friendly Portland, Ore., I would suggest that if our City Council is serious about trying to accommodate cyclists on our Glendale streets, they should visit Portland to see how bikes can safely share the road with automobiles.

According to a report released this year by the Portland Bureau of Transportation, despite a steady increase of cyclists on Portland's streets, the number of serious injury accidents has decreased and the number of fatalities involving cyclists has remained stable.

Councilman Dave Weaver is correct when he says that our streets were designed for automobiles and not bicycles. However, that doesn't mean we can't adapt roads to make room for both.
