BOYS’ WATER POLO

Glendale 13, Arcadia 4: Defense led the Nitros to a Pacific League-opening victory on the road Thursday with Arman Momdzhyan and Martin Chatalyn providing Glendale with more than enough offense with five and three goals, respectively.

“We came out and our focus was on defense,” said Glendale Coach Forest Holbrook, whose team is 11-5 overall this year, “and our main scorers were able to put the ball away today.”

Offensively, Glendale came out slow and managed just one goal in the first quarter. The Nitros found another gear in the second frame, as they rattled home seven goals in seven minutes for an 8-1 lead at halftime.

While it’s good to open league with a win, Holbrook knows the whole league — and every other team for that matter — will be gunning for the Nitros, who are ranked atop the CIF Southern Section Division V polls.

“We have talked about it enough to where they understand now,” Holbrook said of his team being targeted. “The point has been driven home. They know every team is out for them, they practice really hard, come in focused and that showed with their game today.”
