Kenton Ray Pigg December 29, 1920 - December 29, 2012

February 12, 2013

Ken was taken away with no warning on his 92nd birthday. He was born on a farm in Oak Grove, Missouri, the third youngest of the nine children of Charles and Emma Pigg. In his heart there was always a Missouri farm boy who could regale with stories of the joys of growing up in the country.

In 1940 he and his younger brother left Missouri to drive a brand new1941 Pontiac to Los Angeles for delivery to an auto dealer. It was the first time they had been west of Missouri. They decided to stay in California when Pearl Harbor and a draft notice for Kenton interrupted their plans. Serving in the Medical Corps, Ken spent the war in New Guinea and the Philippines, building hospitals and caring for soldiers as well as local civilians.

In 1946 when he arrived back in California, he was ready to settle down. He took a job with Ralph’s grocery and spent the next 43 years managing several stores in the Los Angeles area. In 1949 he married Wilma Lewey. They were married until Wilma died in 2002.

Living alone was new challenge for Ken, but he met the task with his usual good natured attitude and friendly smile. He made new friends and was a welcome addition to the Brentwood retirement community of Somerset. An avid walker, he always had time to stop and talk with his
neighbors.

Ken will be most remembered for his stories and the delight he found in telling them. He was always willing to share experiences of his life with interested listeners. His humility and consideration for others made him a friend to everyone he met. He will be loved and deeply missed by those who survive him: His daughter Sharon Owens and husband Bill, son Chuck Pigg with his wife Stephanie and their three children Kenton, Jennifer, and Samantha, and brother Leroy Paige and wife Jeanne in Arizona.

A memorial service will be held at Oakmont Chapel & Mortuary, Lafayette, CA on March 26th at 10:00 AM.
