While most of the Glendale Community College men’s golf team continues to find its identity, Jin Park has been constantly elevating his level of play.

Park’s rise continued Monday while fighting through the fierce winds during a Western State Conference match at San Dimas Golf Course.

Park shot a one-over-par 73, though Glendale finished tied for third with Santa Barbara City College with a 389. Santa Barbara won in the tiebreaker, as its sixth player finished one stroke better than Glendale’s.

“It was really windy, so I was finding myself trying to get par on every hole,” said Park, a sophomore who took off last season after playing in 2011. “I birdied most of the par-five holes and wanted to finish up strong.

“My short game worked and that also gave me a chance.”

College of the Canyons won with a 369, followed by Citrus (384), Santa Barbara and Glendale (389s), Ventura (390), Bakersfield (404) and Allan Hancock (408).

Glendale received a 76 from Gavit Garabedian, 78 from Win Kyaw, 79 from Ryan Miranada, 83 from McCauley Taylor and 87 from Derrik Hubbard. Santa Barbara’s sixth scorer finished with an 86.

“It’s just been a tough season the whole way through,” Glendale Coach Greg Osbourne said. “We had a couple of bogeys toward the end that killed us.                                                “Jin is pretty damn good right now and he did it again today with another solid round.”

Park will look to continue his strong play when Glendale hosts a conference match at 11 a.m. Monday at Oakmont Country Club.

“It’s our home course, so hopefully we can get in some good scores,” Park said. “Hopefully, the greens will be a little faster.”

Osbourne said Glendale is eager to return to a familiar environment.

“It will be exciting and there should be a lot of people there,” Osbourne said. “We’ve won on our home course the last couple of years and we want that to continue.”
