Sports Roundup: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy volleyball sweeps West Ranch

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, West Ranch 0: The visiting Tologs opened their season Tuesday with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 nonleague win. Katie Conley finished with 11 kills for Flintridge Sacred Heart, which received 10 kills apiece from Kayla Lund and Maddie Peterson. Sophia Coffey contributed 38 assists for the Tologs.

Holy Family 3, St. Monica Academy 0: The Gaels posted a 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 nonleague win Tuesday at Eagle Rock Community Center. Holy Family received 27 assists from Rianne Sanchez and nine kills from Iris Guzman.

California 3, Glendale 2: Host Glendale (2-1) saw California register a 25-16, 16-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13 nonleague win Tuesday.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Glendale in Thousand Oaks Tournament: The Nitros maintained their No. 2 ranking in CIF Southern Section Division V with a fifth-place finish at the event. Glendale posted victories over Leland (14-4), Oaks Christian (13- 6) and Crespi (13-10), but lost to the seventh-ranked team in Division II in Ventura (15-11) and to Palisades Charter (18-14).

Crescenta Valley in Thousand Oaks Tournament: After opening up the tournament and season with two losses Friday, the Falcons rebounded with three victories Saturday at the event.

Crescenta Valley, ranked seventh in CIF Southern Section Division V, locked up a 13th-place finish in the tournament with a 3-2 record and wins over Yucaipa (11-10), Westlake (9-7) and Oaks Christian (15-6). George Vine finished with 36 saves for the Falcons, who also received nine goals from Nate Fernandez and four from Trevor Goddard, in the three wins.

Junipero Serra 14, Flintridge Prep 9: The Rebels (0-2) suffered a nonleague road defeat Saturday despite competing without three starters due to injuries. They received two goals each from Connor O’Malley and John Treinen.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Fresno Invitational: The Vaqueros continued their strong start to 2013 with a top-three finish at the Fresno Invitational Saturday at Woodward Park.

Orange Coast College took first with 36 points, while Yesenia Silva of the College of Sequoias won the five-kilometer race in 18 minutes 29, seconds. Glendale (113) checked in just behind runner-up Mount San Antonio College (105).

Elizabeth Nelson led the way for the Vaqueros and took fifth in 19:13, with Kelly Castillo (15th, 19:43) 30 seconds behind. Glyndyll Mancia (23rd, 20:15) and Teresa Villafuerte (28th, 20:25) packed together in the middle for GCC and Caitlyn Selve (42nd, 20:48) rounded out the team’s top-five finishers.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Fresno Invitational: With Enrique Ramirez and Steban Aviles leading the way, Glendale college took third at Woodward Park on Saturday.

Ramirez and Aviles took 10th and 14th at 21:06 and 21:28, respectively, with American River College’s Will Reyes winning it in 20:35. American River College also took first as a team with 40 points. Mt. San Antonio College took second with 68 points, while the Vaqueros posted 104.

Hoover High alumnus Daniel Marin (25th, 21:41), Jorge Serrano (26th, 21:42) and Jorge Mendoza (29th, 21:51) bunched together to round out Glendale’s scoring.
