Sports Roundup: Etienne sinks huge win for Glendale Community College men's basketball

Glendale Community College 72, Citrus College 69: Jalen Etienne made a three-pointer with less than one second remaining to lift the visiting Vaqueros to a Western State Conference South Division victory Wednesday.

Etienne made a pair of free throws with about 40 seconds left to knot it at 69.

Glendale improved to 18-4, 6-2 in the division.

Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin picked up his 588th career victory, all at Glendale since 1979, and tied him for fourth all-time in the state.


“We were down by four points with less than two minutes left and we needed to get some defensive stops,” said Beauchemin, who got 18 points from Etienne and 16 points and eight rebounds from Emmett Duvall. “We did a real good job on our last possession.

“It turned out to be a high-ball screen and Jalen backed up and made a real long three-pointer. It's a hard place to play, but we did a good job.”

Emerson Castaneda and Gor Plavchyan finished with 11 points apiece for the Vaqueros.


Glendale 55, Citrus College 49: Three Vaqueros scored in double figures to lead Glendale to a Western State South Division road victory Wednesday afternoon.

Guard Elsie Mejia guided Glendale (14-10, 5-3) with 16 points and five assists, while forward Samantha Pyros chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds and guard Mary Karapetyan tallied 12 points.


Flintridge Prep 2, Chadwick 1: The Rebels picked up a key Prep League win on Wednesday afternoon thanks to goals by freshmen Jillian Brady and Maia Cohen. The Rebels improved to 8-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in league.

Arcadia 4, Glendale 0: The visiting Nitros suffered a Pacific League defeat Wednesday. Glendale dropped to 3-10-3, 1-8-2 in league.

Hoover 9, Muir 0: Remi Miller led the way for the Tornadoes with a hat trick in a Pacific League victory Wednesday afternoon.

Emily Sawitskas added two goals for Hoover, which improved to 3-7-1 in league.


Crescenta Valley 7, Burbank 0: The Falcons drubbed the Bulldogs on Wednesday on the road, as Sevag Hamamah and Matt Ryan tallied two goals each with Hamamah adding an assist.

Chris Sinani had a goal and two assists, Justin Wright added a goal and an assist and Brian Ju had a score. Crescenta Valley, which got four saves from goalkeeper Adam Martinez, improved to 18-4-3, 7-3-1 in league for 22 points.
