Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College men's tennis opens conference with road win

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 6, Bakersfield College 3: The Vaqueros bounced back from a loss last weekend with an impressive road victory to kick off Western State Conference play on Tuesday afternoon.

The Vaqueros (5-1) split the action in six singles events, leading off with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory from Hosep Orojian at No. 1 and following with a 6-3, 6-3 victory from Dat Le at No. 4 singles and a 6-2, 6-4 triumph from No. 6 sophomore Santiago Segovia.

The turning point for Glendale came in doubles play, as the No. 1 tandem of Orojian and Lee (8-6), No. 2 pair of Hoover High alums Dro Dermegerdichian and Oleg Simonyan (8-3) and Clayton Pauff and Cameron Braun (8-1) all swept in securing the victory.

“This was a dominant performance and an overall great day at Bakersfield,” Vaqueros Coach Bob MacKay said. “Our effort really paid off in doubles.

“I told the guys before the match that if we don’t win, it’s going to be a real long ride home, so we might as well win.”

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 8, Pierce College 7: Nick Padilla’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning stood as the game-winner in Saturday’s road victory for the Vaqueros, who improved to 4-5.

Keaton Leach also had three scoreless innings of relief.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 83, Bakersfield College 50: Gor Plavchyan finished with 19 points and four blocks Saturday to spark the visiting Vaqueros to a Western State Conference South Division win. Glendale (20-4, 8-2 in the division) won its fifth game in a row. The Vaqueros got 15 points and six assists from Jalen Etienne, 13 points and eight rebounds from Santiago Grady and 12 points and seven rebounds from Emmett Duvall.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Bakersfield College 68, Glendale Community College 54: Visiting Glendale fell Saturday in a Western State Conference South Division contest. The Vaqueros dropped to 15-11, 6-4 in the division.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Battle of the Regions: Buoyed by victories from Lizette Gonzalez and Aisiah Tuiasosopo, the Vaqueros posted 109.5 points to finish second on Friday at Bakersfield College, with Modesto finishing first with 127.
