CHARLES J. UNGER A promise is a promise. Those famous words were spoken by the King of Siam to the Julie Andrews character in "The King and I." Ms. Andrews' character had come to Siam in her capacity as an educator -- they were called teachers back then -- to instruct the children of Siam. Later in the musical, a discussion takes place as to whether the King of Siam will build the teacher a home, which was part of her original deal. The king, played by the inimitable Yul Brynner, uttered the previously mentioned quote.

SNYDER Rosana Z. Ruiz, the daughter of Marco M. and Rosa E. Ruiz of Burbank, and James E. Snyder, the son of the late Edward Snyder and Louise Ratcliff of Willington, Conn., have announced their engagement. Rosana attended St. Francis Xavier Elementary School and Bellarmine-Jefferson High School. She graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor's degree and is working as a television account executive manager in Denver. James graduated from Bolton High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut and his masters in business administration from the University of Colorado.

Allison Fors, daughter of Dennis and Linda Fors of La Cañada and Rodrigo Guillen, son of Darby and Maria Guillen of Highland, Utah were married this past summer at the Newport Beach Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A reception followed at the City Club on Bunker Hill in Los Angeles. Both are graduates of Brigham Young University where the bride received a bachelor's degree in public relations and the groom received a bachelor's degree in corporate finance.

Claudia Peschiutta DOWNTOWN -- Call it the Downtown Glendale Merchants Assn.'s debutante ball. The recently formed group is presenting itself to the community today with a fair featuring food, live entertainment and booths hosted by local businesses. The event will be held in the Brand Boulevard walkway that leads to the Orange Street parking garage. Association President Martin Aguilera said "Glendale Expo 2000" is an effort to let people know the group exists and encourage local business owners to join.

HINCKLEY — TROTTA Heather Michelle Hinckley and Matthew Trotta , both of New York City, have announced their engagement and are planning a September wedding. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Bruce and Debbie Hinckley of Glendale. She attended Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena and received a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Communications. She graduated magna cum laude and was an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Kicking off the new year for the Network Breakfasts is speaker Pete Smith, general manager of Bob Smith Toyota. He will be making a presentation on "Sales and Marketing Techniques" on Thursday morning, Jan. 4, at 7 a.m. in the Verdugo Hills Hospital's Community Room. Smith is a lifetime Crescenta Valley resident. He attended Loyola High School and graduated in 1988. He went to Fairfield University, receiving his bachelors degree in 1992. He worked as an account executive with Metlife selling group life insurance and managing a multi-million dollar book of business.

The groom played the guitar and serenaded the bride with a special song. The bride is the daughter of Theresa and Charles Wright of of Middletown, N.Y. She graduated from Pine Bush High School in New York, and Brooks College in Long Beach, Calif. She is an account executive at Rampage Clothing Co. The groom is the son of Hope D. and A. Thomas Longeretta of Burbank.

Wu -- Simpson Former Glendale resident Crystal M. Wu and Bryan M. Simpson exchanged wedding vows at The Phoenician in Scottsdale, Ariz. Pastor Charles White officiated. Crystal is the daughter of Ronald and Georgiana Wu of Glendale. She graduated in 1996 from Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena and from Georgetown University in 2000 with a degree in international business and marketing. She is an account executive in menswear for Gucci. Crystal was a Ticktocker with the National Charity League, Glendale Chapter from 1990 to '96 and served as its president in 1996.

Robert Chacon The guarantee of better school lunches that will entice more students to stay on campus for lunch led the local school board to approve a new contract with a private food-service consultant. The terms of the contract with Maryland-based Sodexho, one of the largest school lunch consultants in the country, are based on projections of sales of school lunches. La Canada Unified School District will pay the company 8.5 cents per meal it sells, plus a consultation fee of $65,000.

Hamlet Nalbandyan OAKMONT COUNTRY CLUB -- For 140 would-be golfers, Monday was a day to meet a golfing legend in PGA Hall of Famer Paul Runyan. But it was also a day to lend out a helping hand. The 11th annual "Play for the Children" Paul Runyan Orthopaedic Hospital Golf Classic was held at the Oakmont Country Club, and the day was a success. The event was held in order to raise money for the Orthopaedic Hospital and raise awareness for the hospital's various programs.
