GLENDALE ? After playing Little League baseball together for several summers around Glendale, Evan Simonitsch and Jesse Meaux found themselves reunited this summer. This time they were teammates on the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks in the Alaska Baseball League between late June and early August. Simonitsch and Meaux each made their inaugural visits to Alaska to improve their skills after competing at Loyola Marymount University and UC Santa Barbara, respectively. They competed on an organization featuring an established alumni base ranging from Tom Seaver to Dave Winfield to Barry Bonds.

The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene: Team USA off to 3-0 start The USA Men's National Water Polo Team, which includes 1999 Glendale High graduate Kevin Witt , is undefeated in three matches during the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) World League tournament. On Thursday at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos, USA pummeled China, 20-2. Witt scored a goal, as 11 different USA team members tallied scores.

GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene .   SIMONITSCH, MEAUX PAN OUT IN ALASKA While on hiatus from their respective college baseball careers, local products Jesse Meaux and Evan Simonitsch have kept busy playing for the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks in the Alaska Baseball League. Both Meaux, a pitcher, who graduated form Glendale High in 2007 and now attends UC Santa Barbara, and Simonitsch, an outfielder, who graduated from St. Francis in 2006 before going to Loyola Marymount, have played a hand in propelling the Goldpanners (17-17)

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level. Dustin Emmons (Crescenta Valley High, 2007) UC Riverside baseball junior pitcher : It's been a busy summer for the former News-Press Male Athlete of the Year. He was drafted in the 40th round by the Florida Marlins in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on June 9 and since then has gone coast to coast playing summer collegiate league baseball. He played in the prestigious Cape Cod League and is currently plying his trade in the West Coast League for the second consecutive summer, playing for the Corvallis Knights.

GLENDALE — The following are updates on area athletes at the collegiate level. Dustin Emmons (Crescenta Valley High, 2007) senior pitcher, UC Riverside baseball: Emmons, a right-hander, has fared well since joining the Corvallis Knights, a West Coast League summer collegiate squad. Through Monday, Emmons, a former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year, is 3-0 with a tidy 1.73 earned-run average in six appearances. In his last start Monday, Emmons struck out four and allowed just two hits to help the Knights come through with a 3-0 road victory against the Bellingham Bells.
